In this short historical narration, centered on the relations between Cyril of Alexandria and the Prefect of Alexandria, Orestes, as well as the actual involvement of Cyril in the events that led to the murder of the philosopher Hypatia by a Christian mob, the author attempts to show that Cyril was wrongfully accused, not by his contemporaries, but much later by some historians, as an instigator of this murder.
Cyril, during the years of his education, had attended himself philosophical lessons offered by Hypatia, and he was not hostile to the natural sciences of his era. As a Patriarch, however, he took a strong stance against Pagan superstitions, against astrology and magic, and he also castigated the then existing social inequality and political injustice.
