His Holiness Patriarch Irinej delivered an introductory speech on the occasion of the promotion of the book 'Serbs and the Question of Calendar' at the Church of Saint Sava in Belgrade.
The Patriarch stated that Milutin Milankovic is one of the greatest scientists of our century. Along with Rudjer Boskovic, Nikola Tesla, Mihajlo Pupin, he was a very gifted and extraordinary person. He spoke on the scientific path of Milankovic from his early age and his remarkable scientific contribution. The Patriarch stated that Milankovic’s scientific work does not belong to the past, but to the present, and the future as well. Therefore, his work will be explored in many years to come.
He mentioned some of the aspects of the life and work of Milutin Milankovic, pointing at his love for mathematics and his dedication and perseverance in science. The Patriarch mentioned that Milankovic’s family was very significant in those times and they came to Dalj, where Milutin Milankovic was born, from Kosovo, during the large migration of Serbs under the Patriarch Arsenije III Carnojevic in the 17th century.
Milutin Milankovic participated in the question of calendar in 1923. Together with the Patriarch Gavrilo, he went to the Pan Orthodox Congress in Constantinople and proposed a revised Julian calendar – the most accurate calendar that is more precise both from the Julian and the Gregorian calendar. The Patriarch concluded that whatever Milankovic did, he conducted it with great dedication, precision and knowledge and that is why he is one of the most noted scientists.
