The author, in this brief report on the First International Conference for Pastoral Health Care of the Ecumenical Patriarchate that was held in Rhodes, from 8 to 12 October, 2008, after highlighting the fact that the conference brought together ecclesiastical officials, scholars and medical scientists, presents both the theoretical and the practical aspects that were broached in the discussions that took place during this meeting.

      On a theoretical level, the theological identity of pastoral care was brought into focus, in connection with the concept of philanthropy. On a practical level, the latest developments regarding medical and pastoral care of patients were discussed. It was generally recognized, with regard to the practical aspects of pastoral health care, that there is a growing seclusion of the patient, within his/her familiar surroundings, as a consequence of the prevailing way of life in postmodern society and the tendencies that currently appear in medicine and nursing. The challenges of bioethics to the theology and the pastoral activity of the Church was another topic discussed.
