    1. This monograph is devoted to the investigation of the identity phenomenon, the destiny, scientific and pedagogical heritage of the prominent Russian mathematician of the late XIX – the beginning of the XX century, a professor of the Moscow University, D.F. Egorov, who had suffered during the Soviet epoch for his religious beliefs. President of the Moscow Mathematical Society Dmitri Egorov, together with his student N.N. Luzin, laid the foundation for the world famous Moscow school of the real variable functions’ theory. By the number of students Egorov is one of the most "prolific" mathematicians in the world. Among the Egorov’s students there are famous scientists such as N.N. Luzin, I.P. Privalov, V.V. Stepanov, V.V. Golubev, I.G. Petrovsky.

The book authors show that despite the fact Egorov never touched religious and even philosophical issues in his lectures considering mathematics a self-sufficient science, philosophy and theology were no doubt of his interest. Egorov knew well the works of German philosopher Kant, St. Ignatius Brianchaninov and the famous preacher Father John of Kronstadt. Dmitry Fedorovich Egorov had common religious and philosophical interests with the outstanding Russian philosopher and philologist Alexei Fedorovich Losev. Egorov publicly confessed Orthodoxy. Someone from the Moscow mathematical environment remembered his refusal to deliver a lecture on mathematics in a former church, adapted for use as an auditorium. In 1929 Egorov was persecuted for his religious beliefs, and in 1930 arrested and exiled to Kazan. He passed under the case of “All-Union counter-revolutionary organization “True Orthodox Church."
