    1. Born in Thessaloniki, Nikolaos Hatzinikolaou studied Physics at the Physics Department of the University of Thessaloniki. After having fulfilled his military service, he pursued his postgraduate studies at Harvard University (Master's degree in Astrophysics) and M.I.T./USA (Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering) in Boston. He received in 1986 his PhD in Biomedical Engineering (Bio-fluid dynamics) from Harvard University. He worked as research fellow for various hospitals in Boston and as a consultant in space medical technology for Arthur D. Little and NASA. He taught at the Harvard University and M.I.T., the Schools of Medicine of the Universities of Crete and Athens. He studied theology at the Greek Orthodox School of Theology (Hellenic College Holy Cross) in the United States and he received his PhD in Bioethics in 2003 from the Faculty of Theology of the Aristotelian University of Thessaloniki. Ηe was awarded one honorary causa doctoral degree from the Department of Social Theology (Faculty of Theology of the University of Athens, 2008, Science and Religion). Since 1993, he is director of the Hellenic Center for Biomedical Ethics and President of the Bioethics Committee of the Greek Orthodox Church and member of the National Bioethics Committee. He became a monk in 1989. From 1990 to 2004 he served as priest at the monastic Metochion of the Holy Mount Athos in Athens (embassy Church related to the monastery of Simonos Petra).
