Monk Paisius of Hilendar is considered as one of the most influential figures of the Bulgarian national revival. He wrote in 1762 at Mount Athos his work Istoriya Slavyanobolgarskaya (Slavo-Bulgarian History), one of the earliest histories of Bulgaria. The book played an important role in the formation of the national consciousness throughout the 19th century.
