The paper explores how the question of science of theology was posed in Serbian theology of the 20th century and who started it first. It poses that the three contextual frameworks within which this question was initiated may be distinguished, having determined the way in which the answer was given, but which themselves were determined by the motive of posing this question and by the theological paradigm it occurred from. These contexts are: the process of establishing the Faculty of Orthodox Theology at the University of Belgrade, Serbian apologetic theology, and Serbian neo-patristic theology. It turns out that in the first two contexts mentioned, theology tried to pose itself as a science, while within the patristic context, the question of its science is relativized due to the emphasis on the patristic vision of theology for which the present concept of science represents anachronism.
