The book aims to fill the gap in Bulgarian theology, regarding the works on George Florovsky. Its approach is a biographical study which is mainly based on thousands of letters of Florovsky. The work is divided into two parts: first - a biographical part, and second - a detailed bibliography of works by and about Father Florovsky. Focussing on the life of Father Florovsky rather on his texts, and at the same time seeking the balance between personality, events and historicity, Pavel Pavlov aims to uncover a theology which is embodied in the personal story. According to Pavlov, such an approach is essential for understanding Father Florovsky in view of the dominating discourse for presenting Orthodox theology exclusively in the framework of the neo-patristic synthesis. Another biased interpretation of Florovsky’s views is the exaggeration of his ecumenist sympathies. The theological heritage of Florovsky’s, including his interpretation of the teaching of Saint Gregory Palamas about essence and energy, stands out naturally as one of the central problems of the book. Some of the other main problems examined by Pavlov are the relations between exile and Christian mission, and between the academic and the personal experience. The book also paid special attention to the time Florovsky spent in Sofia and his exchanges with theologians and historians working in Bulgaria.
