    1. Schiarchimandrite Emilian, born Alexandros Vafidis, in 1934 in Greece. After graduating from the theological faculty of the University of Athens, in 1960 Alexander took monastic vows with the name Emilian. After that, he lived in seclusion in various monasteries. In 1961 he was installed as abbot of the Transfiguration Monastery in the Great Meteora, and later as a confessor and preacher in the city of Trikala. From that time on he became a spiritual father for many young people. Fr. Emilian was in close spiritual fellowship with many modern ascetics: St. Justin (Popovich), the elders Ephraim Katunak, Ephraim Philotheus, Sofroniy (Sakharov); Metropolitan Amphilochius of Montenegro and Bishop Athanasius (Evtich). In 1995, a serious illness made the elder Emilian gradually withdraw from his hegumen duties.
