The author offers a comparative analysis of the Holy Scriptures interpretation principles in relation to scientific data formulated by the great scientists G. Galileo and M. Lomonosov, and its theological interpretation.
The author believes that reasons for the conflict between traditional authority of Holy Scripture and new authority of scientific knowledge are not in scientific data, but in the person himself. "With the advent of science, the human mind armed with new and precise methods of cognition, had ascended to an unprecedented height, and as a result, that division of human soul that is associated with ancestral sin manifested itself with a new force. This internal division has been reflected in the external activities of people - in particular, in the form of a conflict of science and theology. "
Serebryakov comes to the conclusion that Lomonosov's and Galileo's arguments concerning correct understanding of the Scripture were in many respects similar (the image of two "books", the equivalence of these "books" for the knowledge of God, the need for an allegorical interpretation in all cases of discrepancy between Bible and scientific concepts), despite different epoch, cultural and confessional boundaries. The author notes that in these approaches, proposed by Galileo and Lomonosov, "the influence of the Renaissance and the Enlightenment, which had a clearly anti-Christian spirit, is clearly felt."
However, as Serebryakov concludes, "the value of these scientists' attempts to approach a holistic worldview is great; they were the first to start developing a holistic world outlook of a Christian scientist".
