    1. The article represents the view of Radiy Ivanovich Ilkaev, academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, scientific director of the Russian Federal Nuclear Centre (Sarov) and chairman of the Scientific and Technical Council of the Nuclear Weapons Complex of the State Corporation “Rosatom,” on the creation of a Theology Department at MEPhI (Moscow Engineering Physics Institute and National Nuclear Research University).

Ilkaev points out that this department was founded to bring the humanitarian and ethical element into scientific work. He stresses that cooperation of science students and professors with the Theology Department is being carried out on a voluntary basis. Ilkaev believes that, despite some drawbacks, the Russian Orthodox Church has a “colossal positive role in today's society,” and that the MEPhI Theology Department will provide not only an ethical, but also a creative education. It will help boost students’ creativity and encourage them to learn more about Orthodox culture, philosophy and intellectual tradition. In conclusion he argues that in science the most important thing is enlightenment and that the highest achievements of scientific thought come through insight. Such insights are related to spiritual life and students and young scientists should be reminded of this connection.
