    1. Valentin Petrov believes that in order to go to space one needs a solid spiritual core as space flights represent a very serious challenge to the human psyche and are potentially very dangerous. It is only the spiritual core that helps solve extraordinarily difficult problems. And if this core is Orthodox, then the problem is solved in a very clear-cut manner.

He points out that believers usually carry out their tasks in space brilliantly. This was the case of cosmonaut Titov who was a believer and took icons on board of the space ship. There were numerous critical situations during his one-year flight but due to his faith, he and the crew managed to overcome them and come back to Earth safe and sound. On other occasions the presence of icons helped place difficult situations under control as was the case during a fire at the “Mir” station.

It was with Petrov that Gagarin went to the Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius. Thus it was Petrov who was accused of "drawing the first cosmonaut of the Planet into Orthodoxy" after Gagarin spoke about the necessity to restore the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour in Moscow. Currently Colonel Petrov is an open believer and gives a course on the "Basics of Orthodox Culture" at the Gagarin Air Force Academy. He also teaches the course "Spiritual security and human space flights" to cosmonauts.
