    1. This MA thesis tries to approach the historical and political situation in Greece and also the social, economic and educational situation during the period between 1949 –1974,  such as education and religion during the period of time mentioned above.

The first chapter of this thesis presents the historical and political situation in Greece during the time period between 1949 –1974, in which there is a transition of Greece to a new phase of in history, after a decade (1940 –1949) of ongoing wars, German occupation and Greek civil war. The period after 1949 is characterized by political and state instability, which led to the coup of the 21st of April 1967.

The social and economical situation in Greece during 1949 –1974 seems to have been evolved timidly in the field of social and science modernization and so did the restoration of confidence in the currency through devaluation of the drachma.

The educational situation in Greece during the same period is described by the ''signs'' residued to education by the German occupation and the Greek civil war, which were: high illiteracy (24%), low percentage of national income going to education (1,8%), lack of educational staff and two failed efforts for educational reformation(1959 and 1964).

The second chapter presents the Christian organizations of Greece and moreover examines specifically the work of Christian organization “Zoe”, that had the most remarkable growth. “Zoe” had published the review Aktines from 1938. This magazine was being published monthly and its subjects were of Christian and scientific nature. The identity of the magazine is also determined by the Declaration of Greek Scientists, Litterateurs and Artists in 1946, by which the contrast between science and religion was denounced as deliberately methodical, but simultaneously absolutely inexistent.

Maria Apostolakis here examines the Greek Christian ideals as mentioned by the Aktines magazine. She also presents the historical and social magazine perceptions. One basic perception of the magazine is the distancing from the communist and from the insult of adolescence by supporting the institution of Sunday schools.

Magazine's perception conclude to the fact that, science and religion are interrelated and do not negate each other.

As far as the education is concerned, the magazine claims that, a standard firm educational policy should be practiced. The need of the Church to show its social face, and display a sense of unity, is stated throughout the review’s arguments.
