    1. In this PhD thesis, the author, Alexa-Maria-Tania Tseroni, introduces the concept of environmental stewardship in byzantine philosophy. The dissertation is intended to capture the distinguishing features of the concept and to outline its dimensions. To date, no systematic investigation of this concept has been carried out.

The author developed her theory to explain how the ethical ideas in byzantine philosophy concerning environmental stewardship differ from corresponding anthropocentric perceptions of western intellectual tradition, which are characterized by ideas such as man’s dominion over nature and managerialism. Another aim was to illustrate how these ethical ideas in byzantine philosophy can advance our understanding of environmental stewardship. The approach taken in this dissertation draws on current research on the topic of environmental stewardship, as well as on archival research on related works by byzantine philosophers and works by the Church Fathers.

The findings from the research offer insights on how our understanding of environmental stewardship can be improved. The concept of environmental stewardship in byzantine philosophy is based on the idea of facing nature with respect and love.
