    1. The article reveals the role of the Orthodox educational tradition in the upbringing of the outstanding scientists of the Soviet period. The fact  that many remarkable Soviet scientists, physicists, mathematicians, and engineers were raised in Orthodox environment, in families of theologians and priests, is not accidental.

       The article deals with the phenomenon of educational space of a family, illustrated by a model of kids’ upbringing and education in the family of professor and priest I.A. Artobolevskiy. All of his four children have served to the science, and one of them, Ivan Artobolevskiy, the eminent theorist of mechanical engineering and the James Watt International Gold Medal prizewinner, became a member of the USSR Academy of Sciences.

       The research is based on exploration of the Father Ivan Artobolevskiy’s pedagogical homilies, where he spoke on school and parental education, and the autobiographical notes of his son Ivan Artobolevskiy, and displays the way upbringing in Christian family raised the child endeavor to education, creative work and scientific investigation.

       The Artobolevskiy’s family is presented as an “educational space” where the plenitude of spiritual, intellectual and cultural parental resources is involved. The author oversees the way the Christian relationship between all the family members had generated the family educational potential. The role of the parental social circle and the home library to shape the child educational demands is emphasized. The Artobolevskiy parents had been both the first educators and the first teachers of their children, i.e. they had fulfilled their parental responsibilities entrusted by the Christian educational doctrine and thus had raised the personality of the future scientist.

       The author also focuses on the ways the father participated in the teaching of his son, the future academician, while he was a gymnasia student. The basic role of the father in this family was to lead and organize the unified holistic educational process, to be the intellectual leader and master, to “build” his house as the educational space. In such space the value system, culture and education are translated from the elder to the younger generation through the constitution of the family life.
