    1. This is a memoir of the driver of the archbishop of Alma-Ata and Kazakhstan, Iosif Chernov (1893-1975). The driver recalls that after the first manned flight to space of Yury Gagarin the archbishop was asked by Soviet authorities to make a sermon for this event. Archbishop Iosif puzzled on how to describe this scientific achievement while aligning himself with the Christian faith. He finally came up with the following words: “We all know in what wonderful times we are living and what progress is happening in the world. Many scientists invented many good things. The latest news is that our man Yury Gagarin went to space and came back. Before the flight Nikita Khrushchev asked him if there was God there or not… Yury Gagarin did not see God… but God did see him! And blessed him!”
