    1. Vanga, was a blind fortune teller, depicted by some as a person with extraordinary gifts to predict future, by others as charlatan or a witch. Vanga has on many occasions declared belonging to the Eastern Orthodox but her activity has been denounced by the official church and theologians. The fortune teller has enjoyed a huge popularity in Bulgaria, with hundreds of thousands people visiting her home. After her dead in the 1990s the public interest remained high, with numerous articles, books and films made. According to some, around her person emerged a quasi-religious cult. During her last years Vanga initiated the building a temple near her home, which the Bulgarian Orthodox Church, because of departure from canons, declined to inaugurate. To Vanga have been attributed predictions of different major world events, like the NY terrorist attacks in 2001, but with no evidence has been provided that Vanga has actually made such statements or that her often very ambiguous statements should be interpreted in exactly that way.
