    1. This article took part in ongoing discussions for the place and role of religious education in Bulgarian schools. The author who is a medical specialist (surgeon) argued that religious education is by no means in conflict with the secular character of the educational system. Kaludov underlined the role of the Orthodox Church for retaining the national identity through the centuries. The knowledge of Christian ethics and the history of the Church have their meaning in the current globalizing world. Unconscious necessity of religion nowadays leads to various forms of pseudo-religious beliefs and superstitions. At the same time Christian ethics and moral have been the fundaments of the civilization for two thousand years and a means for individual and social realization. In most European countries, though with many local variations, religion is part of the school curriculum.
