   1. Georgios Babiniotis graduated from the Philosophical School of the University of Athens in 1962. In 1969 he received his doctoral degree from the same School. In the period 1969-71, he pursued postgraduate studies in linguistics at the University of Cologne. In 1972 he became assistant professor, and in 1973 full professor of linguistics at the Philosophical School of the University of Athens and he held this position until 2006. From 2000 to 2006 he was rector of the University of Athens. He has published 18 books, among which is a Dictionary of Modern Greek (Λεξικό της Νέας Ελληνικής Γλώσσας), and more than 150 scientific papers. He is member of several international scholarly societies, and one of the editors of the scholarly journal of General and Historical Linguistics Γλωσσολογία. He has served as Chairman of the State Institute of Education of Greece (1990-92).
