    1. The famous physicist and founder of astronautics, turned to study icon world while investigating the perception of space by human eye and developing optical instruments for observing the docking of spacecraft.

Rauschenbach discusses the method of depicting a four-dimensional space in a three-dimensional space. The fourth dimension according to him, is not a category of time, but an additional spatial coordinate. The author finds a peculiar way to describe four-dimensional space in three-dimensional space by the example of imaging a three-dimensional space on a plane for plane subjects. He further shows that this method has already been developed by the Middle Ages icon painters. For them, the fourth dimension was mystical in contrast to the ordinary (three-dimensional) world.

Academician Rauschenbach shows how this perception of the fourth, mystical dimension was lost as a result of the Renaissance influence on iconography. Naive realism ousted the mystical image that the icon painters had learned to bring into the everyday reality.
