    1. In this article, the author discusses options for teaching religious culture courses in public Russian schools: confessional courses by choice, an integral and compulsory course of all traditional religions, and studying religion in a religious-ethnic school.

The author describes the main concerns expressed by some Russian society representatives concerning introduction of religious courses in school: providing voluntariness of studying religion and, at the same time, reluctance to create a threat to interconfessional and interethnic harmony in school and society, as well as a barrier to the united civic education, the development of Russian civil and cultural identity of children and young people - a so-called dispute about "kids’ separation."

The author believes that there should be no transfer of the historical, social science and general civic educational tasks that should be addressed in humanitarian disciplines to a spiritual and moral education, in the study of traditional religious cultures. Common civic values cannot be shaped by leveling or mixing religions and cultures of the people of Russia.

The content and composition of this spiritual and moral education discipline have to ensure ideological, cultural, ethnic and religious diversity within the scope of Russian cultural identity. This is the novelty, the uniqueness of the religious culture area for those, points out the author, who get used to ideological monotony in both society and school in the Soviet period.
