    1. Aleksandr Borisov was born in 1939 and was a worker in the 1950s. In 1964 he received his Biology degree from the Moscow Pedagogical Institute. After graduation Borisov worked on radiation genetics at the Soviet Academy of Sciences. In 1969 he earned his PhD in Biology. In 1972 Borisov left science and went to study at the Moscow Religious Seminary. His confessor, famous religious writer and priest Alexander Men (1930-1990) supported Borisov in his decision to become a priest as well. Later Borisov studied at the Moscow Religious Academy where he got his PhD in Theology in 1978. It is only in 1989 that he became a priest after having been a deacon from 1973. After the murder of his mentor, Alexander Men, Borisov worked in Men’s parish at the Shubin Church. In 2000 Patriarch Aleksy II ordained Borisov as protoiereus. Borisov became a well-known public figure and was elected to the Moscow city parliament where he worked from 1990 until 1993. He was also part of the President of the Russian Federation Commission for Pardon.

Borisov was often criticized by other representatives of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 1994 Borisov and another priest Georgy Kochetkov fell under heavy criticism at the theological conference Edinstvo Tserkvi for “theological modernism,” arbitrariness within their respective parishes, and propaganda regarding evolutionism. Borisov’s book Pobelevshie Nivy. Razmyshleniya o Russkoy Pravoslavnoy Tserkvi (Whitened fields. Reflections on the Russian Orthodox Church) also got attacked by Russia’s religious community. In this book Borisov pointed out the lack of secular education among Russian clergy and theological education among Russian Christians in general.

Borisov was also highly criticized for his support of ecumenism, as had been preached by Alexander Men. As president of the Russian Bible Society, Borisov regularly participates in joint research projects, conferences and symposia with the Catholics and Protestants.
