    1. Charalabos Charitos, in this paper, describes a debate on evolution, during the first decades of 20th century in Greece. The occasion was a new Girls’ School in Volos, directed by professor Alexandros Delmouzos. At this school A. Delmouzos introduced the new scientific ideas, as evolution, and the vernacular Greek. Delmouzos’ curriculum disturbed conservatists, notably the metropolitan Germanos Mavromatis, who tried to get rid of Delmouzos and his collaborators, whom he labeled as dangerous anarchists. The Volos municipal council desided to close the schoοll in 1911 and prosecute Delmouzos and his collaborators. The trial of the “Atheists” took place in Nafplion, in 1914. Although the court acquitted the accused for luck of proof, the school didn’t open again. Charalampos Charitos here discusses in detail the causes of conflict and the persons involved in this.
