    1. The relationship between science and the Orthodox Christian religion in the Greek-speaking area of the Ottoman Empire during the 18th century was undeniably a relationship of conflict and controversy. This season introduced new scientific ideas from Western Europe, where the era of the Scientific Revolution and Enlightenment had just taken place. The effort of scholars, who studied at the universities of Europe, to reform education and to introduce the natural sciences in curricula of Greek schools, found obstacles in the conservatism of the Church and in its failure to tackle new ideas wisely and with a critical mind. The result was a severe polemic from the side of the Church, particularly in the period, lasting approximately twenty years, before the Greek Revolution.
