The article deals with the key concepts of St. John Chrysostom’s pedagogical doctrine: πλάττειν (plattein), παιδεία (paideia), ̉εκτρέφω (ektrefo), νουθεσία (nouthesia), μάθημα (mathema), δίδαξις (didaksis), ῥυθμίζειν (ruthmizein) and πρόνοια (pronoia). The author took a hermeneutical trip from the modern pedagogical problems to the sense of Chrysostom's concepts. The Greek notions are compared with their translations into Old Russian and modern Russian language.
Particular attention is paid to the concept of πρόνοια (pronoia). This concept appears to be one of the basic in Chrysostom’s pedagogical inheritance, and it displays the unique role of parents in kids’ education. This is a special category of the Chrysostom’s pedagogic which links instruction and education in the unified “providence”, associated with the Divine Providence.
