This article discusses how Astronomy and the Orthodox Church can work in conjunction to combat beliefs in astrology. The authors at first discuss the characteristics of astrology, noting the differences between Eastern and Western astrology. They also mention the similarities between astrologists and psychotherapists. At the second part of the article, the authors discuss the various Orthodox condemnations of astrology, from quotations found in Deuteronomy and the Genesis to the canonical decisions in the Laodicaea council and the Sixth Universal Convention and to the writings of Saint Basil the Great and Saint Gregory of Nissa. They also discuss the writings of Saint Maxim the Greek, the prophet Zecchariah and of Saint John of Damascus. The article concludes by saying that scientific and religious arguments together should prove more effective than either presented alone.
