    1. The press service of the Arkhangelsk Eparchy made a short report on a conference held at theTrinity-Sergius Lavra on the Russian Orthodox Church (ROC)’s attitude toward information technology (IT). The conference was attended by the Committee of Information and Press of Inter-Synod relations of the ROC.

Vladimir Legoyda, Chairman of the Synodal Information Department, opened the conference. Legoyda pointed out that only Christian anthropology could provide solutions to the challenges created by the new reality, whereby IT has acquired particular importance. Sergei Khorunzhy, an academic at the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, highlighted the need to formulate a new approach for relations between people and technologies. He emphasized that the current Russian context favoured the Church’s influence on this issue, since the ROC was no longer being repressed by the state.

For his part, Archpriest Pavel Velikanov said that it is important to apply the Christian Ascetic paradigm in the world of technology, arguing that “technical minimalism” would help people reduce the influence of technology on their lives. According to Velikanov, a person must remain free from the technological world even when he or she has to work with it intensively.

Many other clerics of the ROC and academics participated in the conference.
