Marina Gigolashvili acquired her PhD in Astronomy from the Tbilisi State University in 1965. She has worked at the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory in Georgia, at the Georgian Evgeni Kharadze National Observatory and as a professor at Ilia State University. She has published more than eighty papers in solar physics and astronomy.
