Born in Athens in 1949, Sotoris Gounelas attended courses on Greek and French literature in Paris (1970-1976), but quickly he has been oriented towards the study of philosophy and writing. Dealing with Plato helped him to discover the Orthodox Christian tradition. His acquaintance with the Greek theologian Panayiotis Nellas (1936-1986), in 1982, led him in the Orthodox theological journal entitled Synaxi. Between 1986 and 1997, he was the chief editor of the relevant theological journal. He translated in Modern Greek texts of R. Guénon, S. Weil, N. Berdyaev, P. Florensky etc. His writing activity in the field of Orthodox spirituality, poetry and art includes books and articles in Synaxi and Nea Hestia, as well as in the newspapers Kathimerini and Eleftherotypia.
